함흥 냉면을 좋아하시던 고 이상수 교수는 영국 유학중 동료 학생이 자신을 초대하여 만들어준 스파게티를 맛있게 드신 기억이 있다고 하신 적이 있다.

임페리얼 칼리지 런던(Imperial College London) 혹은 줄여서 임페리얼 칼리지는 영국 런던의 부촌인 켄싱턴·첼시 (Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea)에 위치해 있는 자연과학, 공학, 의학분야 특화 대학교이다. 

1907년 개교한 연구 중심 대학으로서 2013년 기준 전체 교수진 중 72명이 영국 학자에게 주어지는 최고의 영예인 왕립학회 펠로쉽을 보유하고 있으며, 현재까지 모두 14명의 과학분야 노벨상 수상자를 배출하였다. 유명한 동문으로는 페니실린 을 만든 알렉산더 플레밍 경, '사실의 왜곡에 눈 감을 바엔 원숭이를 조상으로 섬기겠다'는 말로 유명한 과학적 진화론의 선두주자 토머스 헉슬리, 2013년 힉스 보존이론으로 노벨물리학상을 받은 피터 힉스, 타임머신, 투명인간, 유전자 조작 등의 개념을 창안한 작가 허버트 조지 웰즈, 록 밴드 퀸의 기타리스트이자 천체물리학자인 브라이언 메이 등이 있다.

영국 국왕 에드워드 VII에 의하여 1907년 이공계와 의학에 중점을 둔 대학교로 설립되어, 런던 대학교(University of London)연합체의 일부를 이루고 있었지만, 2007년 7월에 공식적으로 탈퇴하여 지금은 완전히 독립적인 대학이 되었다. 2002년까지 “Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine”이라고 불리었으나 이후 공식명칭이 변경되어 “Imperial College London,” 짧게는 “Imperial”이라 불리고 있다.

OSA and OSK Name First Recipient of Sang Soo Lee Award

WASHINGTON, March 25, 2014—The Optical Society (OSA) and the Optical Society of Korea (OSK) are pleased to announce that the inaugural Sang Soo Lee Award winner is Mario Garavaglia of the Center for Optical Research in La Plata, Argentina. Garavaglia is being honored for his key role in the development of optics and photonics research and education in Argentina.
 
Established in 2012 by OSA and OSK, the Sang Soo Lee Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in founding or growing the optics and photonics community at a local or regional level. The award honors eminent individuals who have played a key role in a specific region, through research and/or education in optics or photonics, by introducing a new field of study within optics or photonics, or initiating an optics and photonics industry. Sang Soo Lee was known as the “Father of Optics” in South Korea where he had a career spanning more than four decades and was active as an educator, researcher and author.
 
“Mario embodies the spirit of the Lee Award through his dedicated work advancing optics and photonics education and research in Argentina,” said OSA President Philip Bucksbaum. “He has worked tirelessly to grow the community through his students, research labs and publications. On behalf of OSA, we commend him for his efforts and leadership.”
 
“The Lee Award is meant to recognize exceptional individuals who have made a lasting contribution to a local optics community just as Sang Soo Lee did in South Korea,” said Jeong Weon Wu, OSK President. “Mario is a much revered member of the Argentinian optics community and is in a lot of ways, the father of optics there. He is a fitting inaugural recipient of the award and we congratulate him on his accomplishments.”
 
Garavaglia founded the spectroscopy, optics and lasers laboratory at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata in 1966 and the Center for Optical Research (CIOp) in 1977 where he served as director until 1992 and is currently a researcher. Garavaglia has published more than 250 research papers on topics such as classical and modern optics, optical emission spectroscopy and laser spectroscopy and was awarded the 1999 ICO Galileo Galilei Award for his work in support of optics education.
